Nationalities Council update.

The Changing Face of Indianapolis has been the subject of much media discussion lately. At the Town Hall session held 26 June by Channel 13 and The Indianapolis Star Dr. Morton Marcus of Indiana University presented a discussion of the results of the 2000 Census, confirming what we have known all along: Marion County (and, to a lesser extent) Hamilton County are on the leading edge of an increasingly diverse metropolitan area. The Nationalities Council has been Indys mini United Nations for close to three decades, gathering together all the organized ethnic groups in Central Indiana under one banner. (Anyone who wants to see the citys changing face only has to attend one of our meetings!)

Several of those at the recent Town Hall session asked for ways to recognize, celebrate and participate in the metro areas multiculturalism. Thats easy! The very best way for a quarter century has been to attend the annual International Festival, sponsored by the Nationalities Council of Indiana. Since 1976,members of ethnic groups who live right here in Central Indiana have taken the time to stage an event to introduce the rest of the metro area to the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the world. Businesses and cultural organizations with international connections also display their offerings.

If you, your company or organization would like to be part of the festival, check the website! Remember that all are welcome to attend Council meetings. The next one is 7 p.m. 9 July in the Willkie Room, Athenaeum, 401 East Michigan Street, Indianapolis. Representatives of ethnic groups participating in the festival will present brief summaries of their plans for cultural displays and food booths as well as entertainment options.
