Published by the Nationalities Council of Indiana, Inc.

Next meeting is 7 p.m. Monday, 12 June, in the Athenaeum!

Presidents Message:

A most difficult and decisive month has passed since the last meeting of our Council when we decided to put on the International Festival without the assistance of the International Center (by mutual agreement).Dr. Chao Lee will chair this years festival. Please offer to help him with any programs that you have an interest in working on.We need you! Hell talk about the festival plans at our June meeting.

I met with Julia Schildmyer-Heighway of the Childrens Museum about putting on a workshop for any group wishing to have a cultural booth in the Festival. She has indicated her willingness to assist in putting on such a program.I will contact a couple of other folks, too.Once we have final plans, you will be contacted about joining us in this project thatll help you produce a great booth that provides information and encourages others to take a greater interest and to participate in the ethnic community.

If you didnt participate in the 500 Festival Parade with us, you missed a great day!My thanks to the Barangay Club, Ballet Fiesta, Ballet Folklorico, Irish Dancers, Minyo Club of Indianapolis, Scottish Society, Slovenian Cultural Society, Sons of Norway, Swiss Club, Taiwan American Association, Ukrainian Club, Yu-Yu-Kai, and finally my own club, VASA Order of America, for your support in joining in the Parade. As a group, we put nearly 250 people into the Parade. Thanks again for your support.

help! part one

I'm a member of the planning team for the new Indiana State Museum going up in White River State Park. As part of a survey exhibit on the history of Indiana, we want to remind visitors of the increasing  richness and diversity of Hoosiers today. We have fair representation of southern & eastern European groups from the early 20th c., but nothing to represent the diverse cultures that have joined the Hoosier mix in the last 30 years or so.  Could you help us by suggesting what groups we should be sure to mention, and also what objects might be most appropriate to showcase?  I'd greatly appreciate your advice.  My phone is (317) 232-5606; e-mail [email protected].  Thanks! (signed) Mary Jane Teeters-Eichacker, Curator of Costumes, Indiana State Museum.

help! part two

For my project on ethnic and immigrant religious groups in Indianapolis, I need contact names and phone numbers for Protestant and Roman Catholic congregations serving the Korean and Hispanic communities as well as any other groups (including non-Christian) that dont want to be missed in this survey of religious diversity for the Polis Research Center at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. Thanks! (signed) Susan McKee, (317) 297-0502; e-mail [email protected].
