THE ETHNIC HOOSIER .......October 2002

Supplement for members of the Nationalities Council of Indiana, Inc.

1.      Well? Did you do it? Did you get your form in the mail or filled out on line? We need everyones nomination this year please!

What form? The form necessary to nominate the Nationalities Council forthe second round of Celebration of Diversity Awards from Mayor Bart Peterson. Last year we were an also ran. To move to the top of the heap, we need dozens of nominations at least one from each of you: ethnic groups, associates and individual members. You can fill out the form on the internet (http://www.indygov.org/mayor) or fill out the printed copy enclosed with this mailing (or, you can call 317:327-3601 to ask for another one to be mailed to you).DO IT NOW! The deadline for nominations is 15 October 2002, although winners wont be announced until January 2003.

2.      The Promotion Companys management team will be on hand at the October meeting to go over final plans for this years International Festival, including entertainment schedule and booth layout. If you have questions, bring em to the meeting. Its your last chance. If your group hasnt signed up to participate yet, youd better call Pat Hubley right away (317:236-6515 x105) as available slots are disappearing fast this year (interest is building among vendors and other participants the entertainment schedule for two stages is packed full!).

3.      And, speaking of the International Festival: bring a draft copy of your groups basic fact sheet to the meeting for discussion and comment. Remember: the educational component of the festival is essential to our success.Teachers bringing field trips to the festival want to be sure their students can get the answers to such standard queries as where is your homeland? how do you say hello? Prepare your responses in advance, please.

4.      The Nominating Committee still needs each ethnic group to propose NCI board members. Please bring candidates names to the next meeting and give to Susan Salenda, chairman.

5.      Susan Salenda also is the volunteer coordinator for the festival. NCI board members who havent signed up for specific shifts in the NCI booth will be flogged at the meeting.

6.      NCI in a nutshell: The Nationalities Council of Indiana is a non-profit, all-volunteer 501(c)3 corporation that began meeting in 1973. During a NATO Mayors Conference held in Indianapolis the previous year, many ethnic groups organized special events for delegates from their home countries. The founders of NCI realized that these groups, some of which had existed without recognition for decades, could unite to celebrate together the diversity of Indianas capital city. From a nucleus of 5 groups,NCI now represents more than four dozen ethnic clubs and has many other individual, associate and reciprocal members. The NCI produces the largest and longest-running ethnic festival in Indiana each fall.

7.      Although The Ethnic Hoosier goes to all who are (or might be) interested, this supplement is prepared just for NCI members.
