THE ETHNIC HOOSIER .......September 2002

Supplement for members of the Nationalities Council of Indiana, Inc.

1.      Attention, please! Its time for the second round of Celebration of Diversity Awards from Mayor Bart Peterson. We need dozens of nominations at least one from each of you: ethnic groups, associates and individual members. You can download the form from the internet (http://www.indygov.org/mayor) or call 317:327-3601 to ask one to be mailed to you. DO IT NOW! The deadline for nominations is 15 October 2002! That means you need to send in your nomination before our own celebration of diversity, the International Festival, takes place. Well be posting a sample nomination form on the NCI website, but thats just for the details. You must provide the dramatic narrative to help us over the top!

2.      And, speaking of the International Festival: its less than two months away. The Education Committee asks each ethnic group participating to prepare a basic fact sheet on their home country or region (well be passing out samples at the next meeting). Teachers bringing field trips to the festival want to be sure their students can get the answers to such standard queries as where is your homeland? how do you say hello? Etc.

3.      Bob Bunnell will once again handle all NCI advance sale Festival tickets.   Letters have been mailed to all NCI representatives to let them know tickets will be available for pick up at the next meeting. Reps need to give Bob a call (894-0036) and tell him the number of tickets they will take to sell.  That way Bob can have their order ready at the meeting!

4.      NCI, under the able direction of Pat Hubley, is organizing an information table at the Mayor's Community Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on  11 September, working with the Asian American Alliance and the International Center.  All NCI groups are welcome to participate by  sending  a representative. Sign-ups will take place at the next NCI meeting.

5.      The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis has issued a special plea to NCI member groups to help greet the competitors at the opening ceremonies on 6 September. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with a grand procession from Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral on Monument Circle to the Pan Am Plaza see http://www.violin.org.

6.      The Nominating Committee needs each ethnic group to propose NCI board members. Please bring candidates names to the next meeting and give to Susan Salenda, chairman.

7.      NCI in a nutshell: The Nationalities Council of Indiana is a non-profit, all-volunteer 501(c)3 corporation that began meeting in 1973. During a NATO Mayors Conference held in Indianapolis the previous year, many ethnic groups organized special events for delegates from their home countries. The founders of NCI realized that these groups, some of which had existed without recognition for decades, could unite to celebrate together the diversity of Indianas capital city. From a nucleus of 5 groups,NCI now represents more than four dozen ethnic clubs and has many other individual, associate and reciprocal members. The NCI produces the largest and longest-running ethnic festival in Indiana each fall.

  1. Although The Ethnic Hoosier goes to all who are (or might be) interested, this supplement is prepared just for NCI members.
