OUR MISSION
The Global Fund for Women is a grantmaking foundation that provides flexible, timely assistance to grassroots women's groups around the world. Our giving is focused on enabling women to participate fully in all aspects of their societies. The Global Fund supports women's groups working on women's political participation and leadership, poverty and economic autonomy, reproductive freedom, the rights of sexual minorities, the prevention of violence against women, and other issues.
OUR APPROACH
The Global Fund for Women gives grants of $500 to $15,000 to grassroots women's organizations outside the United States. The Global Fund was founded in 1987 by three women who worked in philanthropy and recognized the dearth of funding directed to women's issues worldwide. Since then, we have given over $14 million to seed, strengthen and link 1,400 women's groups in 148 countries and territories around the world. In fiscal year 1998-99, we awarded $3, 116,000 in grants.
The GLOBAL FUND FOR WOMEN provides flexible, timely grants to women's groups around the world striving to improve women's human rights.
The challenges that women face vary widely across communities, cultures, religious traditions, and countries. We believe that women themselves know best how to determine their needs and propose solutions for lasting change. The GLOBAL FUND listens to women's groups, and supports their efforts to improve the situation of women, even when the issues they address are difficult or controversial. We also believe that the way in which we do our work is as important as what we do. This philosophy is reflected in our flexible, respectful, and responsive style of grantmaking.
Since 1987, we have given over $16 million in grants to women's rights groups in almost 150 countries and territories. The 1,600 grantee organizations that we have funded are doing critical work, including:
- improving women's health and reproductive rights
- challenging harmful traditional practices
- increasing women's economic independence
- expanding girls' acccess to education
- ensuring disabled women's rights
- engaging in peace-building and conflict resolution efforts
- strengthening women's political participation
The GLOBAL FUND FOR WOMEN, incorporated in 1987, has public charity, nontaxable, 501(c)(3) status in the United States. We are a non-endowed foundation and rely on the annual support of many generous individuals, foundations, and corporations. We do not fund inside the United States, although we support the efforts of women's funds working on similar issues in this country.
