History
Back in 1854, six homesick young Germans gathered by candlelight in a small room near downtown Indianapolis and started singing together. Soon the small group grew and they were concertizing for their friends and the public at large. They were the Indianapolis Mnnerchor and we have been concertizing ever since to audiences large and small, sometimes with well-known artists and sometimes with local guest vocalists and instrumentalists. We continue to be directedd by a talented professional and accompanied by an accomplished pianist. This is not all work and no play; we foster fellowship among our members and their wives or friends by hosting several social events throughout the season. Our membership makeup has broadened through the years as has our repertoire, although to honor our heritage, we include German music in our programs.
The Indianapolis Maennerchor, is the oldest vocal group in Indianapolis, and one of the oldest continuously performing mens' choir in the United States. Founded in 1854 by six German immigrants homesick for their homeland, the group has performed in concert every year since May 1855. The Maennerchor was one of the great arts institutions at the turn of the last century, and was the premier music group in Indianapolis, featuring operatic and instrumental musicians from around the world. Now in its 147th year, the group continues to present three formal concerts, as well as several "open rehearsal" concerts for residents of nursing and assisted living homes, as an outreach of the group.
