"Operation Walk, established in 1994, is a program of the California-based Arthritis Institute. Each year physicians, nurses and volunteers travel to medically impoverished locales to perform total joint replacement surgeries. As part of this work, they teach and train local physicians and nurses. The program is underwritten with corporate and private donations." [The Indianapolis Star, 3 May 2003: W2]

NOTE: Indiana contingents performed surgeries in Nicaragua in 2002 and Cuba in 2003.
