The Republic of Lithuania hopes to join NATO in 2002.Mr. Usackas is Ambassador of Special Missions at the Ministerial Advisory Group. He is also Director of Multi-Lateral Relations in charge of the NATO application. The application was submitted 1994. Public opinion polls conducted in August and December of 2000 showed more support for joining NATO, increasing from 42% to 49%.Opponents decreased from 25.7 to 22.3%.

Many good things have happened since 1994.Inflation dropped from 35.7% in 1995 to 1.4% last year.Foreign investors were strong, led by Denmark, United States and Sweden, amounting to $624 per capita.

Mr. Usackas pursued his law degree, finishing in 1990 with his thesis written on the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson.During November 1991 he became second secretary of the Western European Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and desk officer for the EC and NATO.He has held many other positions in the foreign service of his Republic.
