����������� Topic:
The Republic of Lithuania hopes to join NATO in 2002.� Mr. Usackas is Ambassador of Special Missions at the Ministerial Advisory Group.� He is also Director of Multi-Lateral Relations in charge of the NATO application.� The application was submitted 1994. Public opinion polls conducted in August and December of 2000 showed more support for joining NATO, increasing from 42% to 49%.� Opponents decreased from 25.7 to 22.3%.
Many good things have happened since 1994.� Inflation dropped from 35.7% in 1995 to 1.4% last year.� Foreign investors were strong, led by Denmark, United States and Sweden, amounting to $624 per capita.
Mr. Usackas pursued his law degree, finishing in 1990 with his thesis written on the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson.� During November 1991 he became second secretary of the Western European Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and desk officer for the EC and NATO.� He has held many other positions in the foreign service of his Republic.
