President's Message August 2012
|
|
I hope everyone has had enough water to keep your plants and trees alive (not grass). It has been challenging bicycle racing training in this weather but I am getting it done. August 5th is the Indiana State Road Championships and that is what I am focusing in on two weeks prior to this event. This race is up in Woodburn, north of Fort Wayne. It is a 50 mile race and flat, “my kind of race”. Hope to finish in the top 20 in the 45+ age group. This is my last year as a 45+ racer next year I move up to 55+.
We are in need of volunteers to man the Penrod booth again this year. Please let us know if you are interested in helping out. This is coming up in September.
The 35nd annual 2012 International Festival is November 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th at the Indiana State Fairgrounds----West Pavilion, please put this great event in your calendar. NCI members are working hard to bring you a most exciting International Festival in November. A great program is shaping up and performance applications for the 2012 Festival have been mailed out to last year's participants. Contact Pat Hubley at 317.225.5501 if your group has not received the information. 2012 booth packets were distributed to groups attending NCI June/July meetings. These packets are available for pickup or can be mailed to you. Let us know where we need to send them.
Our next monthly meeting is August 13th. Visitors are welcome and hope to see you there. All of us were disappointed that ICCCI did not bring their scheduled refreshments. I am sure it would have been tasty. This month refreshment provider is Indiana Association of Chinese Americans (IACA).

The Tomb of Vigna Codini II
February 2011 - January 2013
The Tomb of Vigna Codini II consists of three life-size Roman portraits and a cinerary urn from Rome’s Museo Nazionale Romano. The portraits are of three freedman—or freed slaves—who served the families of the original dynasties of Roman emperors (Julio-Claudian and Flavian). The portraits likely depict high ranking servants as they are among the few to merit sculpted commemorations in marble. The busts of two men and one woman have the hairstyles and demeanor typical of the 1st century A.D., and once stood in deep niches in the walls of a large underground tomb outside of Rome. The tomb was discovered in 1847 under a vineyard of the Codini family and an accompanying photograph taken later in the 19th century shows the exact location of these heads, and a meticulously carved cinerary urn, in niches on the walls.
