Presidents Message.

 Srecno novo leto 2004! *

Thank you for your support in electing me as NCI President. At the risk of clich-speak, there is no i in team. I am privileged to serve with a talented group of officers and board members and pledge to do my best to represent and advocate the goals of the NCI. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions, concerns or lottery winnings by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 317:638-9510.

I was impressed with recent comments (Indianapolis Star,21 December 2003) from Khwaja A. Hasan, professor emeritus of anthropology at Indiana State University. Prof. Hasan was responding to prior comments from a reader who complained about being encouraged to be tolerant toward non-Christian religions. The final paragraph from Prof. Hasan is very relevant in post-9/11 life in America:

"America has always welcomed the new arrivals and in the process has fought against religious bigotry and promoted tolerance. Let us continue that tradition."

Kind of says it all for me! Details on the January 17 Winter Gala will be forthcoming.

Mir,

Josef

Did you know.

"Indy's Surprising Ethnic Dining Scene" is the cover story for the December 2003 "Menu Guide" of Indianapolis Monthly? The article, by Jodi Wright, quotes extensively from Drew Appleby, godfather of http://indyethnicfood.com, which tracks regional and ethnic restaurants in Central Indiana. Her only mistake: thinking dining diversity is new to Indy!

The Purdue School of Engineering and Technology and the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI have joined forces in offering a dual degree in engineering and German. The Program for International Engineering, which began this fall (2003), is a five-year undergraduate degree program in which students can study computer, electrical or mechanical engineering, while learning the German language.

Indy's choice for the second round of "One Book, One City" is Endurance by Alfred Lansing? It's the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition to Antarctica.

Courses for kids in Russian, Mandarin, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and English as a Second Language begin 17 January at the International School of Indiana? Two eight-week sessions are scheduled between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturdays.

Indiana Soccer Academy, owned by Raul and Carlos Zavaleta (originally from El Salvador), was profiled in Indianapolis Business Journal 29 Dec.-4 January 2004?

Indiana had 13,500 foreign students in 2002-3, a 5% increase over the previous year? Purdue University's West Lafayette campus had the most: 5,105, with Indiana University counting 3,495, University of Notre Dame 964 and IUPUI 869 foreign students.

In Memoriam.

Condolences to NCI board member, Susan Salenda, on the death of her mother, Adelaide Formantes Champeau, on 22 December 2003. Both emigrated from the Philippines.
