Whats the NCI?

Independent since the mid-1980s, the Nationalities Council of Indiana is a non-profit, all-volunteer 501(c)3 corporation that began as a standing committee of the International Center of Indianapolis (ICI) in 1973. During a NATO Conference on Cities held in Indianapolis the previous year, many ethnic groups organized special events for delegates from their home countries. The founders of the ICI realized that these groups, some of which had existed without recognition for decades, must have a voice in the new organization if it was to celebrate the diversity of Indianas capital city. From a nucleus of 5 groups in 1973,NCI now represents more than four dozen ethnic clubs and has many other members. The NCI produces the popular International Festival each fall.

Whos in the NCI?

The regular, voting members of NCI are the representatives named by the ethnic organizations that are members of NCI. Other categories of membership are associate (for interested organizations and corporations), individual (open to all) and reciprocal (non-profit organizations which exchange membership privileges with NCI). Governance rests with officers and a board of directors, elected by the voting members.

Where does NCI meet?

Combined membership and board meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month (except December and January) in the Athenum, 401 East Michigan Street, Indianapolis. All are welcome to attend. The next meeting is Monday, 10 June, when Cathy Strauss, director of public relations for the International Violin Competition will tell us all about the Sixth Quadrennial edition, to be held in Indianapolis next September.
