The Indiana Council on World Affairs is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America.
Mission
- To foster public understanding of world conditions and apprciation of the significance and effect of thse conditions on the United States
- To develop individual responsibility for the climate of public opinion relative to U.S. foreign policy
- To provide a non-partisan medium for the exchange of ideas, information and experience concerning world affairs
- To conduct conferences, forums, institutes and other programs concerning world affairs and the U.S. foreign policy for the benefit and education of the members of the corporation and the public.
- To compile, distribute and publish information regarding world affairs and U.S. foreign policy
- To carry out the foregoing purposes in concert and cooperation with such national, state or regional organizations as shall be deemed appropriate
- To engage in such other non-profit activities as are incidental or related to the foregoing purposes
History
The Indiana Council on World Affairs Inc. is a non-profit, non-partisan organization founded in 1955. Its purpose is to foster public understanding of world conditions and U.S. foreign policy through non-partisan forums, conferences and publications. Activities are administered by volunteers in cooperation with key local institutions and organizations. Membership is open to all citizens in our region.
Membership year runs from July through June.
Events
Distinguished Speakers Series
ICWA Distinguished Speakers dinner programs are held on the third Wednesday of the month, September through May, unless otherwise announced, at Butler University, Indianapolis.
Great Decisions Program
Great Decisions is a nationwide foreign affairs program developed by the private, non-partisan Foreign Policy Association. ICWA conducts a Great Decisions project in Indianapolis. Programs focusing on current international issues are explored through discussions led by informed speakers at eight weekly sessions throughout February and March. Serving as the statewide coordinator of Great Decisions, ICWA offers program assistance and distributes the Great Decisions books to groups throughout Indiana.
Autumn Getaway
A two-day Getaway in October at a state park guarantees lectures, discussions, good food, hiking at camaraderie.
International Festival Booth
Members plan and staff a booth with informative international material and games for the annual International Festival sponsored by the Nationalities Council of Indiana.
