Felege Hiywot Center was founded in 2004 and is dedicated to three goals
Educate Marion County resident youth to develop gardening skills, an awareness of nature, commitment to environmental preservation, an ability to make nutritious food choices and skill in recycling and composting. We envision a vibrant Indianapolis Youth where youth and adults transform their communities, their environment and themselves by engaging in the meaningful work of growing healthy food.
Educate second-generation Ethiopian children to embrace their heritage and share their traditions with the Indianapolis community youth and other immigrant communities through programs such as cultural discussion, participation in Black History month, Governorâs conference on youth, International festival and Indiana Black Expo summer celebrations. The Ethiopian culture education provides a venue for these children to learn and express their heritage.
The care of orphans is a third focus for FHC. The center has been involved in supporting orphans in Ethiopia by finding sponsors in the United States and in placing the orphans in Sebeta nunnery orphanage. Sebeta is a fitting partner since, like the program in Indianapolis, focuses educating youth based on gardening.
