President's Message
April 2012
I hope you are enjoying some of this incredibly nice weather we are having. In March NCI was notified by the 500 Festival Parade of invitation to provide a parade unit. We gladly accepted and are now planning for this May 500 Festival Parade Event.
The 500 Festival will provide a large banner at the front of our group that says “Nationalities Council of Indiana” and “2012 International Festival”. We would like to have as many ethnic groups as possible participating. Please circulate the date and the idea among your members to gauge your organization’s interest in being in the parade.
Basic requirements: 1) Marchers must be in ethnic attire; 2) Participants must be over 10 years old; 3) Participants must be able to walk the entire 2.5 miles of the parade route. We need @ 100-150 total NCI members to make this work. Insurance will be provided by NCI. I will have more information about this at the April NCI meeting.
All groups planning to participate should send a representative to the April meeting.
For my personal note of the month my Marian University power booster class is only two weeks away from finishing. It has been a long brutal training season. Just was notified by USA Cycling that I was ranked 6th in the state in 50+ open road category racing for the month of March. Last Sunday I travelled to Lexington Kentucky for the Annual Spring Circuit Race. The race was combined 35+, 45+ and 55+ Category 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 scored separately event. I placed 33rd overall and 16th in the 45+ age category. There were 46 riders that started the race. That was a good first race finish for me.
On a sad note, our loyal and active member Chuck Workman, “Voice of the International Festival” and stage manager of the International Festival for over 25 years, passed away this past week. Chuck was a wonderful man and he will sorely be missed. “Rest in peace Chuck.”

Planning for the 35rd annual 2012 International Festival November 15th to the 18nd at the state fairgrounds is progressing. The festival committee will decide on the theme during the April meeting. If you want your group vote to count please have your representative attend. NCI monthly meetings are open to the public and we look forward in welcoming guests interested in the council and its mission. The council meets on the second Monday of the month (next meeting April 9th) at 7:00 p.m. at the Max Kade Room at the Athenaeum located at the southeast corner of New Jersey and Michigan Streets, downtown Indianapolis. See you there!!

In Memoriam

We mourn the passing, and celebrate the life, of our friend and colleague, Chuck Workman. Chuck passed away at his home Sunday, March 25, 2012. Many know him as the "Voice of the International Festival," our Stage Manager for the International Festival for over 25 years. Below are some thoughts on our friend. We will surely miss him…
Family of Chuck Workman,
Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time we pray the love of God enfold your family during this times and he helps you heal with the passage of time.
On behalf of the entire Peruvian Association of Central Indiana and our community our hearts are with Chuck’s family.

Josef (and friends of Chuck Workman),
I am with great sadness that our dear friend has left us. This sudden news still comes to me with much disbelief and sorrow. I regret that I am out of town and will not be able to attend Chuck's service. I wish I could be there to share my happy encounters and memories of Chuck with his family as well as his friends. Chuck was a very special man to many people, myself and my girls included who are very sad to hear they will not get to see Chuck again. His warm personality, kind spirit and friendly smile made him stand out. Although Chuck's spirit remains with so many of us, the International Community will not be the same without him. On behalf of the entire Persian Society our hearts are with Chuck’s family.
Sincerely,
Cresta S. Vossoughi
Society for the Promotion of Persian Culture
Thank you very much this unexpected, but much appreciated, personal note regarding Chuck's passing. His absence will certainly leave a big void in the hearts off all who knew him and had the pleasure of working with him in a wide variety of arenas. It is difficult to comprehend that his bigger than life personality will be absent from future events and activities that are so near and dear to so many of us, especially in the international community. Chuck was a very special supporter of the Mexican folk dance group Ensamble Folklorico Indianapolis since its formation in Indianapolis about 12 or 13 years ago. He promoted the group far beyond its first community performances on many occasions. His friendship to the group, and his personal friendship will remain in our hearts forever. I also wish that I could be there to share some very special stories; however, I will not be able to attend services for Chuck as I will attending funeral services for my beloved uncle at the same time. Let us keep Chuck's spirit alive in this community. We ALL KNOW that this is the type of legacy that he would wish for us to continue.
Good bye, Chuck! We will miss you!

Chuck Workman: Distinctive voice. Jazz expert. International Festival entertainment emcee. Indianapolis raconteur. Austrian beer aficionado. Wry humor. Sly smile. NCI Member of the Year - 2007. Executive board room. Welcoming presence to everyone. Irreplaceable individual.

WICR is mourning the loss of Chuck Workman, who passed away over the weekend. Chuck is a legend in the Indianapolis Jazz and broadcasting communities. He joined WICR in April of 2006 with the Saturday Evening Jazz Show and later brought his Sunday Morning Jazz Show to The Diamond as well. Chuck’s impact on WICR and the students he worked with cannot be overstated in the six years he was involved with the station—not only with the high quality of his programs, but also because of his work promoting the station and his dedication to the jazz community. Most importantly, Chuck mirrored WICR’s mission with his efforts to involve students in the production of his programs. He also took great pride in helping out during WICR’s fund drives, as it allowed him more opportunity to talk on the air about the jazz he loved. Chuck will be dearly missed by everyone in the WICR family, including current students, staff, and alumni.
