President's Message
January 2012

First and foremost, I want to thank Marlon Alfonso for his hard work being NCI President for the past two years. He maintained the ongoing activities of NCI. His term was very successful. I look forward to working with our newly elected officers and board members. It is exciting right now planning for the 2012 International Festival. Committees are being formed to take up the challenge of getting all the work done to have another successful festival. We at NCI invite you to volunteer for a committee of your choice and make a real impact.
The 2011 festival was one of the biggest in the last 35 years. Attendance was over 20,000, with over 6,500 elementary, middle and high school students attending. Walking through the festival during student times, I could see that the festival was a big hit again with all the kids. There are many educational programs for 2012 that are being planned. If you are an educator with any ideas, this would be a great way to test them.
I want to congratulate our International Festival award winners:

In Memoriam
We celebrate the life of our longtime supporter and friend, Prince Julius Adeniye, who passed away December 3, 2011. Prince Julius was the descendant of Yoruba kings and chiefs in Nigeria; he was an Indianapolis resident since 1971. He learned to drum at the age of three by resting his hands on his grandfather's hands, and he selflessly shared his art and culture with others throughout his life.
Prince Julius founded and regularly played with the popular ensemble Drums of West Africa. Named Young Audiences’ 2002 National Artist of the Year, Prince Julius taught thousands of school children about West African culture through music, food, and the language of drumming, drawing on the lessons of his grandfather.

Prince Julius entertained thousands over his decades of performing. He was a regular at the International Festival for many years, and he will be missed.
