President's Message
July 2012
In these hot days of summer, NCI members are already working hard to bring you a most exciting International Festival in November. A great program is shaping up and performance applications for the 2012 Festival have been mailed out to last year's participants.
Thanks to those NCI members that participated in the Asian Festival at Garfield Park. I heard it was a great festival with many family friendly activities.
Contact Pat Hubley at 317.225.5501 if your group has not received the information. 2012 booth packets will be distributed to groups attending NCI July meeting. These packets are available for pickup or can be mailed to you. Let us know where we need to send them.
The 35th annual 2012 International Festival is November 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th at the Indiana State Fairgrounds----West Pavilion; please put this great event in your calendar.
Please visit NCI website www.nationalitiescouncil.org or NCI blog at www.nationalitiescouncil.blogspot.com for more international news and events.

SPOTLIGHT - POLAND

Poland and Indiana
Poland is located in central Europe; Indiana is also centrally located. Poland has as many as seven neighboring countries, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus and Russia. Indiana has just four surrounding states.
The area of Poland 124,547 sq mi is 3.5 times larger (Indiana - 36,418 sq mi). The capital of Poland is Warsaw, population -around 2 million people. Yes, there is also the town of Warsaw in Indiana. Its population is substantially smaller – around 14 000. It is not a capital of the state, but is the county seat of Kosciusko County. Thaddeus Kosciusko, for whom this county was named, was a Polish national hero; he is also famous for his contributions to the success of the Revolutionary War.
But within a short drive from the north-western corner of Indiana lies the great city of Chicago. Around 2 million people living in Chicago area claim some Polish roots – hence Chicago is considered “the second largest Polish city.”

There are many immigrants from Poland living in Indiana. Many people in Poland are fluent in English. But finding an American émigré in Poland would be challenging. So would be finding an American fluent in Polish.

ONGOING CULTURAL EXHIBITIONS
India – No Place Like Home
6 July 2012 – 20 July 2012
In conjunction with its new cultural exchange program, the Global Art Exchange, the Harrison Center for the Arts is pleased to present "India - No Place Like Home." The Harrison Center has partnered with the Reflection Art Gallery in New Delhi, India to bring Moumita Ghosh and Prittam Priyalochan to Indianapolis to collaborate with local artists Elizabeth Guipe Hall, Quincy Owens and Jonathan Frey. The artists will work together for one month to create a body of work for this group show that opens Friday, July 6th.
The purpose of the Global Art Exchange is to add depth and diversity to artists' lives and work by engaging them in a collaborative, creative, international community. The GAE fosters global connections and encourages cross-cultural awareness both in relationships and in artistic expression. It also seeks to build within the local context of Indianapolis a growing community sense that we live in a global culture and a world-class city.
The art hangs through July 20th.
Also that night: Work by Adam Collier Noel in Gallery No. 2. In the Gallery Annex - Norah Kundrat. In the Underground - Indy Refugee. In the Gym - Cultural Cannibals' DJ Kyle Long.
