President's Message
June 2012
Wow, what a month of May in Indianapolis. Whom should I thank first in making this a great month? Gratitude goes out to all those that have touched me in some way, whether at home, work, community service and play (bicycle racing).
I believe it is going to be a hot summer. My wife Karen and I have really been busy the last two months building and opening new Yogulatte Frozen Yogurt store on Main Street in Speedway. Karen has been working 15 to 17 hour days getting her new business going. She really is a hard worker. For all her efforts the store has been a big success. She opened the Thursday before Memorial weekend. It was a perfect time to open. It was hot and there were lots of people in Speedway for the race. Everyone that has come in has enjoyed the new store and great frozen yogurt and coffee.
Again this year the Nationalities Council of Indiana had a great parade unit at the Indianapolis 500 Parade. The parade is a great community effort that we all can share in participating. Let’s make next year even better. If any of our ethnic groups that want to participate or add to their unit (drums, music, dancing, etc.) we need to start planning early (January /February 2013) any changes that will have to be explained on our 2013 parade application.
Let’s give a “hand” to all the ethnic groups that participated this year. Everyone did a great job. It was hot but it was all fun. Please e-mail your pictures to Pat Hubley with credits (copy Jena Myers, [email protected], for the Ethnic Hoosier).

NCI next monthly meeting is June 11th at 7:00 P.M. Hope to see you all there.

Allen Cem Galloway, MPA,

President, Nationalities Council of Indiana

SPOTLIGHT - NORWAY

At the top of Europe, the Gulf Stream’s warm waters keep Norway’s 20,000 mile coastline ice-free all year. With the many deep fjords and good harbors, the sea has always been important in the economic and cultural life of the country. From Viking ships to tall ships to giant oil tankers and cruise ships, shipping has brought riches from all corners of the world. The rich fishing grounds of the North Sea give food for sustenance and export, salmon and mussel farms make outlying districts economically viable. For the last fifty years the North Sea oil fields have transformed the country.
Norwegians participate in international peace keeping forces and serve as mediators in crisis situations all over the world. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo in December every year.

A Taste of Liberia
On April 21, 2012, the Liberian Progress Foundation (LPF) hosted a program entitled, "Taste of Liberia," at the Abundant Harvest United Methodist Church in collaboration with the Goodness & Mercy Foundation.
The program was held in the spirit of cultural enrichment. One of the objectives of the Liberia Progress Foundation is the promotion of cultural diversity and understanding between Liberians and Non Liberians living in the United States. A presentation by LPF Chair-Lady, Siah Fallah-Brown, focused on Liberian history, its people, culture and ties to the United States. There were approximately seventy-five (75) guests in attendance.
After the presentation, attending guests were treated to traditional Liberian food and music. Some of the attendees were volunteers who will be traveling to Liberia this Fall to work with various mission projects. This event served as an orientation for them.
As we press forward with our objectives in the year 2012, the Liberia Progress Foundation is extending an open invitation to any organization who would like to know more about Liberia or have an interest in collaborating with us on future projects. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or call (317)721-2575.

The Tomb of Vigna Codini II
February 2011 - January 2013
The Tomb of Vigna Codini II consists of three life-size Roman portraits and a cinerary urn from Rome’s Museo Nazionale Romano. The portraits are of three freedman—or freed slaves—who served the families of the original dynasties of Roman emperors (Julio-Claudian and Flavian). The portraits likely depict high ranking servants as they are among the few to merit sculpted commemorations in marble. The busts of two men and one woman have the hairstyles and demeanor typical of the 1st century A.D., and once stood in deep niches in the walls of a large underground tomb outside of Rome. The tomb was discovered in 1847 under a vineyard of the Codini family and an accompanying photograph taken later in the 19th century shows the exact location of these heads, and a meticulously carved cinerary urn, in niches on the walls.
