President's Message
March 2012
Everyone I have talked to this year so far about the weather says that we really had a mild winter. Based on my past 1000 mile by March 1st bicycling logs that go back over twenty years (since I have been keeping track of my mileage outside) from January 1st indicate this has been the best winter in over six years. I smashed my goal this year and will have over 1200 miles outside for the year. For an old master’s racer like me that is a lot of miles. This week is the second week of my third of four indoor power booster classes at Marian University Cycling Center on the “Compu-Trainer” machines. My power output has steadily been increasing this winter. I am about 3 percent higher than last year at this time. Dean Peterson Marian University cycling coach and a USA National Teammate of mine on 2002 USA team that went to Cuba for the Pan American Masters Cycling Championships and his staff have done a great job motivating me and my classmates in working hard this winter. Thus my fitness level coming into the new cycling season will be good. I hope to do well in my races this year. Wish me luck!
Planning for the 35rd annual 2012 International Festival November 15th to the 18th at the state fairgrounds is underway. The festival committee will decide on the theme either in the March meeting and conclude during our April meeting. “The festival is our organization’s largest community outreach program. Festival dates are timed to coordinate with International Education Week, an educational initiative sponsored annually by the U.S. State Department. Each year over 2,000 volunteers representing over 50 countries create culture/country displays highlighting language, art, native dress, and geography; demonstrate unique ethnic or cultural forms; and provide on going ethnic music and dance. Special hours on Thursday and Friday are reserved for schools, and last year 6,500 students traveled the festival equipped with passports and educational programming specifically created for the festival. Each year the festival hosts a Naturalization Ceremony that presents citizenship certificates to hundreds of new U.S. citizens.”
If you haven’t sent in your dues for Nationalities Council membership for 2012 please put your check in the mail along with the membership form (there is a downloadable membership form on the NCI website). Ethnic groups that want to participate in this Year’s 500 Festival Parade need to be members as of that date.

NCI monthly meetings are open to the public and we look forward in welcoming guests interested in the council and its mission. The Council meets on the second Monday of the month (next meeting March 12th) at 7:00 p.m. at the Max Kade Room at the Athenaeum located at the southeast corner of New Jersey and Michigan Streets, downtown Indianapolis. See you there!!
