President's Message May 2012
|
|
It is race month, and the city is “abuzz” with screaming and roaring engines. Related to the Indy 500, my wife Karen is opening the first YoguLatte Franchise on Main Street in Speedway a few days before Memorial Weekend. Hope all of you can visit and enjoy some yogurt.
NCI is working hard to muster ethnic groups to come and walk the 500 Parade May 26rd in their own ethnic attire. We have had a tremendous response to our call to gather.
Our next meeting is Monday, May 14, 7:00 PM at the Athenaeum. Primary business at that meeting will be to finalize our parade unit for the 500 Festival Parade. Our parade unit banner reads “Nationalities Council of Indiana” and underneath “Indy International Festival.” One of our Chinese heritage groups will lead the unit with their Lion Dance team. Individual Nationalities Council organization members in ethnic dress will walk behind the Lion Dance team. We hope to include the national flags of the countries represented by the organizations in the Nationalities Council.
Basic requirements: 1. Marchers must be in ethnic attire; 2. Participants must be over 10 years old; and 3. Participants must be able to walk the entire 2.5 miles of the parade route. Step off for the parade is Noon on May 26th, but we will gather at 10 AM (Promotion Company) at our marshalling location toorganize our unit. The 500 Festival provides some parking areas for parade participants and parking passes, and we will distribute maps and passes at the May meeting.
If you have organizations that would like to participate in the parade, please forward the following information for each group: To: Pat Hubley [[email protected]]
1. Name of organization
2. Contact Person
3. Contact’s Phone Number
4. Contact’s e-mail address
The contact person should plan to attend the Nationalities Council meeting on May 14th. NCI will send information via e-mail to participating NCI organizations (and ethnic groups that are not members) prior to the May 11th meeting regarding parade day marshalling instructions and parking updates.”
Thanks goes out to India Association and Raju Chinthala for invitation to attend Indian Ambassador visit to Indianapolis dinner/ reception/ talk. The ambassador spoke highly about the relationship between the United States and India.
I am looking forward to our next monthly meeting.

The Tomb of Vigna Codini II
February 2011 - January 2013
The Tomb of Vigna Codini II consists of three life-size Roman portraits and a cinerary urn from Rome’s Museo Nazionale Romano. The portraits are of three freedman—or freed slaves—who served the families of the original dynasties of Roman emperors (Julio-Claudian and Flavian). The portraits likely depict high ranking servants as they are among the few to merit sculpted commemorations in marble. The busts of two men and one woman have the hairstyles and demeanor typical of the 1st century A.D., and once stood in deep niches in the walls of a large underground tomb outside of Rome. The tomb was discovered in 1847 under a vineyard of the Codini family and an accompanying photograph taken later in the 19th century shows the exact location of these heads, and a meticulously carved cinerary urn, in niches on the walls.

Universe Is Flux: The Art of Tawara Y?saku
11 November 2011 - 10 June 2012
The Indianapolis Museum of Art will present the first large-scale exhibition of works by Tawara Y?saku, a contemporary Japanese artist known for his highly energetic brushstroke. Universe Is Flux: The Art of Tawara Y?saku will feature works inspired by Tawara’s belief that the universe is unstable and constantly changing. Executed primarily in ink on paper, his works use the cumulative effect of many brushstrokes to create powerful and expressive works, apparent in even his smallest 3 in. x 5 in. paintings. Although Tawara eschewed representational art, many of his paintings recall traditional ink landscapes or other forms in nature.
