Teaching with Indy's International Festival

Meeting the Mayor Reciting the Pledge Together Learning About Indiana's Heritage High Schoolers at the Festival

If I bring my kids to the International Festival, what can they do?

See the world without leaving Indiana. Sing the National Anthem and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with Americans from the four corners of the earth. Watch dancers, musicians and singers perform traditional and contemporary entertainment from across the globe. Learn about the many and varied cultures around the world. See some of the immigrant groups that have settled in Central Indiana, from the earliest to the most recent. Explore their own ethnic heritage. Write their names in Chinese calligraphy. Taste foods from around the world. Explore the range and depth of cultural tradition in Indiana. Try their hands at drumming or test their feet at ethnic dancing. Watch hundreds of their neighbors become new citizens during a Naturalization Ceremony conducted by a federal judge. Learn a new word in another language. Gain a new perspective on what it means to be an American.

Several educational programs are available for the 2006 International Festival. The student passport program, funded by Eli Lilly Foundation, provides an opportunity for students to "travel" the festival and secure visas from the countries they visit. In addition we offer a series of lesson plans and activities available for all teachers attending the festival.

The Nationalities Council has set aside two days for school field trips between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We suggest younger students attend Thursday, November 2, and older students attend Friday, November 3.

How much does it cost?

Cost per person is $3. We provide 1 free ticket for every 20 purchased. To purchase tickets, arrange a field trip, or order teacher materials please e-mail Pat Hubley or call 317:225-5501.
